Review Sever/Verbreken - Lauren DeStefano
Verbreken is het laatste deel in de trilogie van The Chemical Garden. Rhine is ontsnapt uit de klauwen van haar enge schoonvader Vaughn en probeert haar broer terug te vinden. Samen met Linden en Cecily slaat ze op de vlucht. Zo hoopt ze antwoorden te vinden op al haar vragen.
Toen ik dit boek eindelijk in handen had kon ik niet wachten
om het te lezen. Het eerste boek was fantastisch en sprookjesachtig, het tweede
wat donkerder en luguberder, maar zeker met een goed verhaal. Het kon niet
anders dan dat het derde boek een zinderend einde zou leveren, er stond
namelijk ook veel op het spel en er moesten veel vragen beantwoord worden. Jammer
genoeg heeft dit boek het niet geleverd.
De eerste honderd vijftig pagina’s worden gespendeerd bij
een gekke, oude broer van Vaughn (de oom van Linden) waar Rhine maar blijft
door miepen over het feit dat ze haar broer wil gaan zoeken, maar ze blijft
daar zitten. Ze doet helemaal niets. Er staat haar niets in de weg en toch
blijven we gedurende honderd vijftig pagina’s een beetje rond hangen bij de
gekke oude deur. Soms gebeurde er wat, maar dat was dan ongeveer tien pagina’s
lang en vervolgens was het weer gezemel. Heel jammer, want ik had toch verwacht
dat een boek dat maar 367 pagina’s lang is en in lettergrootte 14 is afgedrukt
niet mijn tijd verspild met het rondhangen bij een gestoorde man zonder doel.
Als we dan eindelijk op pad gaan en Rhine’s broer terug zien,
blijkt het allemaal één groot complot te zijn. Niet dat dat erg is, dat maakt
het juist beter, maar de manier waarop de schrijfster Rowan (haar broer) heeft
neergezet laat een zure smaak in mijn mond achter. Veel te ongeloofwaardig.
De uiteindelijke uitleg over wat de Chemical Garden nu
betekent komt ook echt pas helemaal aan het einde en wordt zo’n beetje drie
keer vaag vernoemd. Oké, dus we vernoemen een serie boeken naar iets wat maar
een paar keer voor komt en eigenlijk ook helemaal niet zoveel inhoud … dat is
raar.
Rhine doet trouwens ook helemaal niets in dit boek. Wat begon
als een krachtige vrouw met een eigen mening en wil, eindigde in een slap
aftreksel van een Mary Sue. Zelfs toen iedereen om haar heen dood ging, haar
wilde doden, haar alles afnam wat ze liefhad, deed ze niets. Sterker nog, de
persoon die de ‘bad guy’ eindelijk van zijn denkbeeldige troon afstootte was
niet zij, maar Cecily!
Daarnaast krijg ik het gevoel alsof de schrijfster niet wist
wat ze aan het doen was. Het is alsof ze zichzelf in boek 1 en 2 een gat had
gegraven, waar ze zich vervolgens in boek 3 weer uit moest wurmen, niet wetende
hoe. Zo verzon ze een paar plottwists die totaal uit de lucht kwamen vallen, een
land wat blijkbaar helemaal geen last heeft van het virus maar niemand weet
hiervan, mensen die plotseling dood gaan zonder logica, mensen die opeens van
karakter veranderen. En dan heb ik het nog niet eens gehad over het feit dat de
ultieme ‘bad guy’ opeens in een goed daglicht wordt gezet, alsof dat er magisch
voor zorgt dat we alles wat hij gedaan heeft opeens zullen accepteren. Ik vind
het allemaal smakeloos. Toen ik het boek uit had dacht ik: ‘Nou … oké. Was dit
het?”
Erg jammer. Gewoon heel erg jammer.
Het enige echte mooie was dat Cecily (één van Rhine’s
zustervrouwen) zich prachtig had ontwikkeld over de drie boeken. Ze ging van
verwend kreng naar moeder naar een meisje dat voor zichzelf en haar kind
opkwam, ondanks dat ze begon als angstig en klein. Het is eigenlijk het enige
dat ik bijzonder mooi geschreven vond.
Al met al geen goede conclusie van deze prachtige serie. Ik
had zo veel verwachtingen en ben alleen maar teleurgesteld. Dat is altijd
jammer.

Sever is
the last part of The Chemical Garden Trilogy. Rhine escaped from Vaughn’s
mansion and tries to find her brother again. She runs away together with Linden
and Cecily, hoping to find answers to all her questions.
When I finally
got this book into my hands I couldn’t wait to read it. The first book was
magical and fairytale like, the second a bit darker and grittier, but it certainly
had a good story. I was expecting this book to deliver a spectacular ending,
because there was so much at stake and so many questions needed answering. Unfortunately,
this book did not deliver.
The first
hundred and fifty pages are spent at the house of the crazy, old brother of
Vaughn (Linden’s uncle) where Rhine just keeps whimpering about the fact that
she wants to go look for her brother, but she doesn’t. She just stays there,
doing nothing but cleaning and eating apples all day long. There’s nothing in
her way to go search for her brother and yet we keep hanging around this crazy
old guy for a hundred and fifty pages. Sometimes something happened, but that
was like ten pages long and then we’d have the muttering of Rhine again. Too
bad, because I’d expected a book that’s only 367 pages long and is printed in
font size 14 to not waste my time hanging around some lunatic without a goal.
When we
finally do go look for her brother and actually find him it turns out to be one
big conspiracy. Not that that’s bad, on the contrary, but the way the writer
gave life to Rowan is disgusting and awkward. Very unbelievable.
The explanation
of what the Chemical Garden is, by the way, only comes at the end of the book
and is only mentioned like three times. Alright, so we’re going to name a
series after something that only happens a couple of times and has no real use …
that’s downright strange.
Also, Rhine
does literally nothing in this book. What started out with a powerful woman
with a voice of her own, ended up being a bad example of a Mary Sue. Even when
everyone around her dies, or someone wanted to kill her, or took away
everything she loved, she did nothing. More importantly, the person who
actually threw ‘the bad guy’ off his ‘imaginary throne’ wasn’t Rhine, but
Cecily!
Next to all
that, I also get the feeling the author didn’t know what she was doing. It was
like she buried herself into a deep hole in book 1 and 2 and had to dig her way
out in book 3, not knowing how. She made up a few plottwists that were totally
random, a country that had apparently never heard of the virus and nobody knew
about them, people suddenly died without there being any logic to it, people
changing character all of the sudden. And then I didn’t even talk about the
fact that the ‘bad guy’ is displayed as being ‘good’, only he did it wrong (he
had the right intentions - or something like that), like that magically makes
it okay for him to have done all that sick shit. Like we’d accept that. It’s
just distasteful. When I was finished with this book I was like, “Well … okay. Was
this it?”
Just a
pity. A real pity.
The only
great thing about Sever was that Cecily (one of Rhine’s sister wives) had
developed beautifully over the course of three books. She went from spoiled
brat to a mother to a girl that stood up for herself and her kid, even though
she started out as fragile, angsty and small. This is actually the only thing
that was well written in this entire book.
Overall, this
is not a good conclusion to the wonderful series. I had so many expectations
and was only disappointed with the outcome. Such a shame.
