Review If I Should Die - Amy Plum
Ik heb echt heel lang gewacht met het recenseren van deze
titel. Niet omdat ik geen tijd had, maar gewoonweg omdat ik echt geen zin had
om zoveel negativiteit te moeten spuien. Toch vind ik dat het nu eens moet
gebeuren.
If I Should Die gaat verder waar Until I Die ophield,
namelijk dat het vriendje van Kate, Vincent, dood is en dat ze hem weer tot
leven wil wekken en terughalen. Dat is ook eigenlijk al genoeg gezegd.
Het is namelijk zo dat het HALVE boek over dit hele gebeuren
gaat. Nee, we gaan niet lekker in de actie, of in de liefde, of in het
mysterie, we krijgen gewoon 150 pagina’s gezeur van de hoofdpersoon te lezen.
Ja, ze wil hem tot leven wekken, dat weten we nu al wel,
hoor! Ik zat echt heel lang te wachten tot het eindelijk zo ver was, want ja,
natuurlijk wist ik allang dat het wel goed zou komen. Het was echt een lange
sleur.
Bovendien heeft Amy Plum haar boek echt vol gegooid met
nutteloze scènes, zoals gesprekken tussen de hoofdpersoon en de grootouders
over dat ze veilig moet doen, ja echt heel boeiend. In plaats van dat er in elk
hoofdstuk weer een nieuw onderdeel van het plot wordt verteld, krijgen we een
idioot uitsmeersel dat me het idee geeft dat de auteur gewoonweg niet wist wat
ze moest doen om het te rekken.
Eenmaal bij de reanimatie aangekomen heb ik veelvuldig
gegaapt door de saaiheid. Dat niet alleen, maar ik moest soms ook het boek aan
de kant leggen, zo irritant werd het. De kunstjes die ze uithalen zijn echt
niet goed uitgedacht en voelen alsof ze uit de lucht zijn komen vallen, omdat
dat nou eenmaal lekker makkelijk was om de boel op te lossen (lees: Deus Ex Machina).
Natuurlijk ben ik nog steeds niet te spreken over de liefde
tussen Vincent en Kate, die schijnbaar enkel op lust berust is, aangezien ik
nog steeds geen idee heb waarom die twee op elkaar gevallen zijn. Het was er
gewoon en klaar. Ik geloof er niet in, dit maakt het zwak.
Dan komt ook nog het feit dat ik al in boek twee wist dat
Kate eigenlijk de champion was. Ik had het al gezegd, en o ja hoor, daar is hij
dan. Ik rolde mijn ogen erbij toen ik het las. Ja, dit was ‘het grote geheim’
van het hele boek. Nou, wat een groot geheim, zo groot, dat ze alles al had
verklapt in boek twee. Waarom moet ik dan boek drie nog spannend vinden?
De laatste honderd tot vijftig pagina’s is waar het allemaal
om draait, namelijk het gevecht tussen de ‘goeieriken’ en de ‘slechteriken’. Nou,
dat was snel voorbij. Het sloeg nergens op, voelde echt out-of-character en de
opper slechterik ging als eerste dood. Hoezo slap einde.
Natuurlijk is het eind goed al goed, ondanks dat de grote
baas van de goeieriken dood is, gaan ze toch lekker verder alsof er niets aan
de hand. Wat? Ze kenden elkaar al tweehonderd jaar en iedereen is er zo
overheen? Het boek eindigt met iemands dood en vervolgens gaan die twee
lovebirds over een brug van de Seine lopen om te zoenen?
Dit boek is echt misselijkmakend saai en vreemd geschreven. De schrijfstijl is ook ouderwets en de karakters denken niet zoals echte mensen, maar zoals mensen uit de zestiende eeuw, zo oud dat het is opgeschreven.

Ik heb er echt spijt van dat ik deze boekenreeks heb
opgepakt. Geen aanrader dus.

I really
put off reviewing this one. Not because I didn’t have time, but just because I really
didn’t like having to spew the negative feeling this book left me. Still, I think
I should.
If I Should
Die starts off where Until I Die left. Kate’s boyfriend Vincent is dead and she
wants to resurrect him and get him back. That’s actually pretty much what this
entire book is about.
You see, at
least HALF of the entire book is about this. No, we’re not going to enjoy some
action, some love or some mystery; we just get 150 pages of whine from the main
character.
Yes, she
wants him alive again, and we know that already, thank you! I don’t need to
hear it for a 150 pages. I was really waiting until they got on with it,
because yeah, of course we already knew it was going to be alright. That’s Amy
Plum - happy forever after, always. It was really one big annoying book.
Besides,
Amy Plum has filled the book with useless nonsense, like conversations between
the main character and her grandparents about being safe with the revenants,
yeah, really interesting. Not. Instead of having a new plot item revealing in each
chapter, we get an idiotic one-sided plot that’s spread out across the book
like peanut butter on a sandwich. It gives me the idea the author just didn’t
know what the heck to do with the book and just drag it on as much as possible.
When we
finally arrive at the reanimation, I’ve been yawning profusely. Not only that,
but sometimes I just had to throw the book aside, because I found it so
annoying. The tricks the characters pull are just not realistic or well thought
out, like they came falling from the sky, because well, it probably was an easy
way to fix plot problems (Read: Deus Ex Machina).
Of course I’m
still not happy with this so called Love between Vincent and Kate, which is apparently
only based on lust. I still don’t get why those two ever fell in love. It was
just there. Suddenly. Out of nowhere. And all they say is ‘I love you’ without
saying why. I don’t get it. I don’t believe it and it’s fake, which makes it
incredibly weak.
Then there’s
the fact that I already knew Kate was the champion. I already said it, and oh
dear, here it is. I was rolling my eyes with no end when I read it. Yes, this
was the “big secret” of this book. Well, what a big secret … so big, Amy Plum
had already spoiled it in book two. What am I supposed to find exciting about
this?
The last
hundred to fifty pages is what it’s all about; the fight between the good guys
and the bad guys. Well, that was over quick. It didn’t make any sense, felt
really out-of-character and the big bad guy died first. What do you mean a weak
ending? This is the perfect example.
Of course,
all's well that ends well. Even though the big boss of the good guys is dead,
the rest of the guys still go on like it’s no big deal. What? They’ve known
each other for two hundred years or so, and everyone’s just over it? Like that?
The book ends with someone dying and the next thing you know the two lovebirds
go walk across a bridge to make out?
This book
is somehow strange and makes me feel sick. It’s weirdly written as well, since
the characters talk and think like people from the middle ages. It’s really
written in old language, not realistic.
I regret
ever buying this series. Not one I would recommend.
