Review: If I Should Die - Amy Plum [NL&ENG]

Review If I Should Die - Amy Plum

Review If I Should Die - Amy Plum

I really put off reviewing this one. Not because I didn’t have time, but just because I really didn’t like having to spew the negative feeling this book left me. Still, I think I should.

If I Should Die starts off where Until I Die left. Kate’s boyfriend Vincent is dead and she wants to resurrect him and get him back. That’s actually pretty much what this entire book is about.

You see, at least HALF of the entire book is about this. No, we’re not going to enjoy some action, some love or some mystery; we just get 150 pages of whine from the main character.
Yes, she wants him alive again, and we know that already, thank you! I don’t need to hear it for a 150 pages. I was really waiting until they got on with it, because yeah, of course we already knew it was going to be alright. That’s Amy Plum - happy forever after, always. It was really one big annoying book.

Besides, Amy Plum has filled the book with useless nonsense, like conversations between the main character and her grandparents about being safe with the revenants, yeah, really interesting. Not. Instead of having a new plot item revealing in each chapter, we get an idiotic one-sided plot that’s spread out across the book like peanut butter on a sandwich. It gives me the idea the author just didn’t know what the heck to do with the book and just drag it on as much as possible.

When we finally arrive at the reanimation, I’ve been yawning profusely. Not only that, but sometimes I just had to throw the book aside, because I found it so annoying. The tricks the characters pull are just not realistic or well thought out, like they came falling from the sky, because well, it probably was an easy way to fix plot problems (Read: Deus Ex Machina).

Of course I’m still not happy with this so called Love between Vincent and Kate, which is apparently only based on lust. I still don’t get why those two ever fell in love. It was just there. Suddenly. Out of nowhere. And all they say is ‘I love you’ without saying why. I don’t get it. I don’t believe it and it’s fake, which makes it incredibly weak.

Then there’s the fact that I already knew Kate was the champion. I already said it, and oh dear, here it is. I was rolling my eyes with no end when I read it. Yes, this was the “big secret” of this book. Well, what a big secret … so big, Amy Plum had already spoiled it in book two. What am I supposed to find exciting about this?

The last hundred to fifty pages is what it’s all about; the fight between the good guys and the bad guys. Well, that was over quick. It didn’t make any sense, felt really out-of-character and the big bad guy died first. What do you mean a weak ending? This is the perfect example.

Of course, all's well that ends well. Even though the big boss of the good guys is dead, the rest of the guys still go on like it’s no big deal. What? They’ve known each other for two hundred years or so, and everyone’s just over it? Like that? The book ends with someone dying and the next thing you know the two lovebirds go walk across a bridge to make out?

This book is somehow strange and makes me feel sick. It’s weirdly written as well, since the characters talk and think like people from the middle ages. It’s really written in old language, not realistic.
I regret ever buying this series. Not one I would recommend.

Going insane up here!

OH MY GOD - SEVER the third book in the chemical garden trilogies IS COMING OUT IN DUTCH ON 8/8/2013!!!!!!

*Squealing like a fan girl*

Okay, I know this blog post is totally different from what you're used to, but I decided to crank up this blog a bit, show you a little more about myself and also what I like to do in my free time or when I read. I know I post a lot of reviews and stories, but I also want to show a different side of myself.

And what other perfect way is there than to show you my undying love for this trilogy? If you haven't read the Chemical Garden Trilogy, go ahead and do it NOW!

I haven't posted a review about these books, because I read them before I even started this blog. It was from 'before my time as a blogger' and therfor, I didn't write reviews back then (such a shame - 'cause this book is AWESOME).

This is also the reason why I read the book in Dutch. It was before I realized books in the Netherlands are published like a year after the original English version and this is causing me to sour pout. So from then on, of course I only bought English books.

Anyway.

To celebrate the fact that I will be braindead when this book is finally in my hands, I will now give you my awesome list of actors that I deem appropriate to play the characters in the movie that should be made of the Chemical Garden Trilogy.

Onwards with the list!

Rhine - Teresa Palmer or Madison Riley
linden - William Mosely
rose - Meaghan Martin
cecily - Gemma Ward
gabriel - Munro Chambers or Jake Abel
vaughn - Jeff Bridges or Sean Connery, whichever possible :P
jenna - Phoebe Tonkin
rowan - Logan Lerman

Any hair colors that don't match can be painted :P

Anyway, I couldn't post up all the images, because the blog became all cluttered and IMDB won't let me link from their site (stupid blogger.com and IMDB problems).

GOD I can't wait to read this one. I must say, it's weird if I would review it now, seeing as I've read, but not reviewed the previous two books, but who cares, what the hell, I'll just do it, because these books were AWESOME!!!!!

Also, note that Lauren DeStefano, the author, is already writing a new series called Internment Chronicles.

*Squeal some more*

Anyway, Cya ;)

Review/Recensie: Inferno - Dan Brown [NL&ENG]

(English one below)

NL versie

Review/Recensie Inferno -Dan Brown

Waarom?

En guess what? Niets. Helemaal niets.

Is deze man hiermee rijk geworden?

Jammer. Zeer jammer. Hoe is deze hype ooit ontstaan?

Review Inferno - Dan Brown

It’s been a long time since I last read something other than Paranormal Romances. I’ve read the previous Dan Brown book and I’ve seen all the movies, so I thought, what the heck, let’s just read this one too.

Inferno by Dan Brown is, of course, all about Robert Langdon who has to solve a couple of mysteries using his amazing magic tricks where he shoots information from his head like a magician pulling rabbits from a hat. He’s hunted by some strange, secretive organization and has to save the world together with his partner in crime.

Shortly put, and that’s the first negative point of this book, the plot is just a rewritten version of all the other books Dan Brown has written. Same story, same ingredients, same style, same plot, just a different sauce (namely, the setting and subject). This makes the story boring.

Next problem. At page 20 I already know what the next 300 pages are about. The little ‘hints’ Dan Brown throws in aren’t so little and even the most dimwitted reader could see where the book was headed. I think this is very bad, because nothing is left to the surprise of the reader. All the facts are thrown into our faces and told again 50 pages later, like we didn’t know already or simply forgot about it.

Then there was something else. I hate it that Dan Brown changes the perspective on and on and on. It makes this book so weak. Why? Well, I’ll give you an example. In the first scene we see Robert and his partner running. The perspective switches to the partner. She finds out a tourist who’s travelling with them isn’t trustworthy and is up to something. She thinks he’s bad and wants to tell Robert. Then there’s another perspective switch, back to Langdon. She tells him and he says something like this: “OOOH, really? NOOO, you’re kidding, right?” -.-’

I hoped Dan Brown was kidding me. Guess not.

I had the sudden urge to hurl the book out the window. Come on. If a writer uses different perspectives, he should make sure there are still secrets in the story that aren’t visible to the reader. There have to be things we can’t see, hear or notice from the character’s mind. That’s what makes a book exciting. Not telling everything and explaining it afterward. The only thing remotely exciting about this book was after page 400. Yeah, that’s about 90 chapters into the book.

Another harsh point. This book feels more like some kind of boat ride for tourists. It visits all kinds of places, goes from city to city, all without any logical reason other than ‘yeah, that seems fun, let’s put this in’ (I think Dan Brown actually thought that when he wrote this). And then there’s Robert Langdon, who seems to have all the time in the world to describe everything about his surroundings, from the way it looks to its vast history, while he’s fleeing for his life to prevent getting killed. Yeah, when a man is hunting you with a gun in his hands, of course you take the time to take in the beautiful structures around you.
Uh … yeah … sure.

The next thing was actually the last straw. In the book, stuff was used to show Langdon where he should go next. A pen with a hologram, a mask with text on it. The bad guy put those things on there. Yeah, people actually do that, they place their plan elaborately, and in cryptic symbols, on various strange objects, give it to the person who’s supposed to hunt them down, just because they like getting caught in the act?
Uh, what? Triple face palm, right there.

The entire book I was waiting for Dan Brown to explain why in God’s name the bad guy literally gives away his plans to Langdon (as if he actually knew what Langdon was going to do! Epic mindreading!) without it giving him any advantage.
And guess what? Nothing. Nothing at all.

One good point about this book: the subject, namely, when something is justice, yet morally wrong, what would you choose?

At the end we get some epilogue that only consists of Langdon showing us his obsession for his Mickey Mouse watch (seriously, I NEVER want to see such a watch again, or I’ll break it) and he’s been whining about it the entire book. He looks one last time out the window to admire the view. Well, what a brilliant ending. Fantastic. Poetic …
I closed the book and thought to myself, ‘is this it?’. Did this man become rich with this? I think it’s pure crap, to be honest.

It’s a real pity. How did this hype ever happen?

Kort Verhaal - Verloren schaduw

Patrick was haar beste vriendje. Patrick was veel leuker.
‘Laten we over onze schaduw heen springen!’
