Review/Recensie Inferno -Dan Brown

Het is een tijd geleden dat ik iets anders heb gelezen dan Paranormal Romance. Ik heb het vorige boek van Dan Brown ook gelezen en heb de films ook allemaal gezien, dus ik dacht, kom, ik lees ook het volgende boek.

Inferno van Dan Brown gaat natuurlijk weer over Robert Langdon die een aantal mysterieuze problemen moet oplossen door gebruik te maken van symboliek. Hij wordt weer achterna gezeten door één of andere geheime organisatie en moet met een hulpje de wereld redden.

Kort gezegd, en dat is ook gelijk negatief punt nummer één, is het plot weer een herschreven versie van alle andere boeken die Dan Brown al geschreven heeft. Zelfde verhaal, zelfde ingrediënten, zelfde stijl, zelfde plot, alleen met een ander sausje (namelijk de setting en het onderwerp). Dit maakt het verhaal zacht gezegd saai.

Volgende probleem. Al bij pagina 20 weet ik waar het boek de volgende 300 pagina’s over gaat. De kleine ‘hints’ die Dan Brown erin gooit zijn zo klein nog niet en zo’n beetje elke slimme lezer kan gelijk doorhebben waar het boek naartoe wil. Dit vind ik erg jammer, want er wordt niets aan de verassing overgelaten. Alle feiten worden gewoon in onze gezichten gesmeten en 50 pagina’s later nog een keer verteld, alsof we het allemaal nog niet wisten of vergeten waren.

Dan nog iets. Ik haat het dat Dan Brown telkens van perspectief wisselt. Het maakt het zo slap. De spanning is totaal weg. Waarom? Nou ik geef een voorbeeld. In de eerste scene zien we Robert en zijn hulpje rennen. Het perspectief wisselt naar het hulpje. Die komt erachter dat een toerist die met hen meereist toch eigenlijk niet te vertrouwen is. Ze verdenkt hem en wil het Robert vertellen. Dan komt er weer een perspectief wissel en zien we alles weer vanuit Roberts oogpunt. Ze vertelt het hem en hij reageert ongeveer zo: “OOOOOH, echt waar? NEEE, dat meen je niet?” -.-’

Dan heb ik echt de neiging om het boek uit het raam te gooien. Kom op zeg. Als je als schrijver verschillende perspectieven gebruikt, zorg dan ook dat er nog steeds geheimen in het verhaal zitten die niet zichtbaar zijn voor de lezer. Er moeten juist dingen zijn die we niet zien, horen of kunnen opmerken uit de gedachtes van de karakters. DAT is wat een boek spannend maakt. Niet alles verklappen en uitleggen.

Nog een vervelend punt. Dit boek voelde meer als een soort toeristen boottocht. Het ging van plek naar plek, stad naar stad, zonder logische redenen anders dan ‘ja, dat lijkt me ook leuk om te laten zien’ (ik denk dat Dan Brown dat ook dacht, toen hij dit schreef). Gek genoeg heeft Langdon ook uitzonderlijk veel tijd om alles uit te leggen over zijn omgeving, terwijl hij notabene op de vlucht is voor iemand die hem wil vermoorden. Natuurlijk, als er man met een pistool achter je aankomt, neem je de tijd om de briljante gebouwen in je op te nemen.

Uhm … ja …

Het volgende was dan eigenlijk wel de druppel. In het boek worden spullen gebruikt om Langdon te tonen waar hij heen moet. Een pen met een hologram erin, een masker met daarop teksten. De slechterik heeft die dingen erop gezet. Ja, dat doen mensen ook, ze zetten expres hun plan, in cryptische symbolen, op vreemde objecten, geven het aan de persoon die hen moet vinden, omdat ze het zo leuk vinden om gepakt te worden?
Uh, wat? /facepalm x3.

Het hele boek heb ik gewacht tot eindelijk werd uitgelegd waarom in hemelsnaam de slechterik zijn plannen letterlijk weggeeft aan Langdon (alsof hij ook echt wist dat Langdon dat allemaal ging doen!) zonder dat het een voordeel voor hem oplevert.

En guess what? Niets. Helemaal niets.

Eén mooi punt aan het boek: de kwestie waar het om draait, namelijk, wanneer iets rechtvaardig is, maar moraal gezien niet door de beugel kan. Waarvoor kies je dan?

Aan het einde krijgen we nog een epiloog dat enkel bestaat uit een scene waarin Langdon zijn obsessie voor zijn Mickey Mouse horloge (serieus ik wil NOOIT meer zo’n horloge zien, want ik smijt hem kapot) voor de miljoenste keer laat zien (want daar heeft hij het hele boek over gezeikt) en kijkt hij nog eenmaal uit het raam om het uitzicht te bewonderen. Nou zeg, wat een fantastisch eind. Zo poëtisch ….

Ik sloeg het boek dicht en dacht: ‘is dit het nu echt?’. Is deze man hiermee rijk geworden? Ik vind het echt prut boeken, eerlijk gezegd.

Jammer. Zeer jammer. Hoe is deze hype ooit ontstaan?

Review Inferno - Dan Brown

It’s been a long time since I last read something other than Paranormal Romances. I’ve read the previous Dan Brown book and I’ve seen all the movies, so I thought, what the heck, let’s just read this one too.

Inferno by Dan Brown is, of course, all about Robert Langdon who has to solve a couple of mysteries using his amazing magic tricks where he shoots information from his head like a magician pulling rabbits from a hat. He’s hunted by some strange, secretive organization and has to save the world together with his partner in crime.

Shortly put, and that’s the first negative point of this book, the plot is just a rewritten version of all the other books Dan Brown has written. Same story, same ingredients, same style, same plot, just a different sauce (namely, the setting and subject). This makes the story boring.

Next problem. At page 20 I already know what the next 300 pages are about. The little ‘hints’ Dan Brown throws in aren’t so little and even the most dimwitted reader could see where the book was headed. I think this is very bad, because nothing is left to the surprise of the reader. All the facts are thrown into our faces and told again 50 pages later, like we didn’t know already or simply forgot about it.

Then there was something else. I hate it that Dan Brown changes the perspective on and on and on. It makes this book so weak. Why? Well, I’ll give you an example. In the first scene we see Robert and his partner running. The perspective switches to the partner. She finds out a tourist who’s travelling with them isn’t trustworthy and is up to something. She thinks he’s bad and wants to tell Robert. Then there’s another perspective switch, back to Langdon. She tells him and he says something like this: “OOOH, really? NOOO, you’re kidding, right?” -.-’

I hoped Dan Brown was kidding me. Guess not.

I had the sudden urge to hurl the book out the window. Come on. If a writer uses different perspectives, he should make sure there are still secrets in the story that aren’t visible to the reader. There have to be things we can’t see, hear or notice from the character’s mind. That’s what makes a book exciting. Not telling everything and explaining it afterward. The only thing remotely exciting about this book was after page 400. Yeah, that’s about 90 chapters into the book.

Another harsh point. This book feels more like some kind of boat ride for tourists. It visits all kinds of places, goes from city to city, all without any logical reason other than ‘yeah, that seems fun, let’s put this in’ (I think Dan Brown actually thought that when he wrote this). And then there’s Robert Langdon, who seems to have all the time in the world to describe everything about his surroundings, from the way it looks to its vast history, while he’s fleeing for his life to prevent getting killed. Yeah, when a man is hunting you with a gun in his hands, of course you take the time to take in the beautiful structures around you.

Uh … yeah … sure.

The next thing was actually the last straw. In the book, stuff was used to show Langdon where he should go next. A pen with a hologram, a mask with text on it. The bad guy put those things on there. Yeah, people actually do that, they place their plan elaborately, and in cryptic symbols, on various strange objects, give it to the person who’s supposed to hunt them down, just because they like getting caught in the act?
Uh, what? Triple face palm, right there.

The entire book I was waiting for Dan Brown to explain why in God’s name the bad guy literally gives away his plans to Langdon (as if he actually knew what Langdon was going to do! Epic mindreading!) without it giving him any advantage.

And guess what? Nothing. Nothing at all.

One good point about this book: the subject, namely, when something is justice, yet morally wrong, what would you choose?

At the end we get some epilogue that only consists of Langdon showing us his obsession for his Mickey Mouse watch (seriously, I NEVER want to see such a watch again, or I’ll break it) and he’s been whining about it the entire book. He looks one last time out the window to admire the view. Well, what a brilliant ending. Fantastic. Poetic …

I closed the book and thought to myself, ‘is this it?’. Did this man become rich with this? I think it’s pure crap, to be honest.

It’s a real pity. How did this hype ever happen?

Review/Recensie Everbound -Brodi Ashton

Everbound is het vervolg op Everneath. Nikki gaat naar de onderwereld om Jack te redden, samen met Cole en nog een paar anderen.

Het begin komt wat traag op gang. Nikki zit te janken omdat ze Jack kwijt is en probeert nog wat van haar leven te maken, hoewel het nog niet zo erg is dat ze bijna doodgaat (denk: Twilight – kuch). Het verhaal kwam pas echt lekker op gang toen ze Cole achterna ging zitten om te proberen naar de Everneath te gaan met hem. Ze probeert hem over te halen mee te komen, omdat ze hem nodig heeft om het in de Onderwereld te redden.

Uiteindelijk lukt het haar en gaat Cole mee. Het wordt steeds duidelijker, naarmate het boek vordert, wat voor gevoelens Cole wel niet voor haar heeft. Dit komt prachtig uit de verf. Er wordt geen ‘ik houd van je’ gebruikt, maar subtiele hints om de lezer het gevoel te geven dat Cole veranderd is. Hij deed zo lief en wilde alles voor Nikki doen dat ik op een gegeven moment eigenlijk ook begon te hopen dat hij zou winnen. Dat ze met hem verder zou gaan, Jack zou redden en dat die vervolgens bij haar beste vriendin zou belanden, terwijl ze zelf met Cole koning en koningin werden en lekker verliefd waren. Eind goed al goed. Nee, toch maar niet. Dat vond ik het enige minpunt. Ik had haar liever bij Cole gezien, maar de schrijfster wilde blijkbaar per se dat ze met Jack zou eindigen. Ze blijft voor altijd verliefd op hem.

Ook al begrijp ik wel waarom; Jack wordt enorm lief en charmant neergezet in dit boek. De flashbacks waarin hun achtergrond verhaal verder naar voren komt zijn beter neergezet dan in het eerste boek. Ze komen niet zo uit de lucht vallen, maar zijn eerder onderdeel van het huidige verhaal, omdat Nikki wordt gevraagd hieraan te denken (om Jack te vinden, moet ze aan hem denken).

De Everneath zelf is ook briljant in elkaar gezet. De gedetailleerde beschrijvingen waren zo mooi dat ik het echt voor me kon zien. Het grappige was nog, dat ik (toen ik het boek al uithad) later nog een kaart van de Everneath vond en uiteindelijk bleek ook dat wat ik me verbeelde volledige klopte. Haar beschrijvingen waren dus erg duidelijk, zo duidelijk als de kaart.

Het is ook fijn dat Brodi deze keer veel meer in ging op de Everneath zelf en laat zien hoe het daar allemaal in zijn werk gaat, hoe het er nou echt uit ziet et cetera. Het is allemaal veel uitgebreider dan het eerste deel in de reeks. Het is tevens veel spannender. Elk hoofdstuk gebeurt er wel iets waar mijn hart van op hol sloeg. Of het is Cole met een onthulling (of één van zijn maatjes) of er gebeurt iets verschrikkelijks waardoor ik dacht dat iedereen doodging. Ik moest gewoon verder lezen.

En dan het einde. Sjongejonge. Ik vond het zo zielig, maar tegelijkertijd ook heel fijn. Want Jack was wel terug, maar ten koste van iets heel belangrijks en het is Cole’s schuld. Brodi krijgt het voor elkaar om me te laten denken dat alles eerst helemaal in de soep loopt, vervolgens komt alles weer goed en gooit ze er een bom van een plottwist bovenop (die overigens ietwat te snel ging voor mij – ik moest de pagina’s twee keer opnieuw lezen). Het was echt bizar en tegelijkertijd fantastisch. Geweldig gedaan. Dit boek is velen malen beter dan de eerste.

Al met al vind ik dit boek erg geslaagd. Ik kan niet wachten op het derde deel. Ben echt benieuwd wat Nikki, Cole en Jack gaan doen om het allemaal op te lossen, maar ik verwacht dat het magisch zal zijn!

Review Everbound - Brodi Ashton

Everbound is the sequel to Everneath. Nikki goes to the underworld to save Jack, together with Cole and a couple of other guys.

The beginning is rather slow. Nikki’s whining about losing Jack and tries to make something of her life, though it’s not that bad that she feels like dying (think: Twilight – cough). The story really kicked in when she went after Cole to get him to go to the Everneath with her. She tries to bring him, because she needs him to survive in the underworld.

Eventually she succeeds and Cole goes with her. As the book progresses, it becomes clearer how much Cole feels for her. This is written beautifully. There’s no ‘I love you’ or other cliché stuff, just subtle hints to give the reader the feeling that Cole has changed for the better. He’s so sweet and wanted to do everything for Nikki, which eventually made me hope he’d actually win. That she’d continue with him, save Jack and that he’d end up with her best friend, while Nikki would be all lovey-dovey with Cole and become king and queen together. All is well that ends well. Nope. Guess not. That’s the only negative point, I think. I’d rather have seen her with Cole, but apparently the writer wanted her to end up with Jack, no matter what. She stays in love with him.

Although I do understand why that is; Jack is so sweet and charming in this book. The flashbacks where their background stories are told are written so much better than in the first book. They don’t just come out of nowhere. Rather, they are now a part of the current story, because Nikki is asked to think about the flashbacks (to find Jack, she must think of him).

The Everneath itself is also beautifully described. The detailed descriptions were so good, I could imagine them in my mind. The funny thing was that (when I finished the book already), I found a map of the Everneath in the book and it corresponded almost exactly with what I had in mind. Her explanations were so clear, they formed a map in my head.

It’s nice to see how Brodi continued the Everneath theme and broadened the entire concept. The way it works down there, what it really looks like, et cetera. She expanded much more on this than in the last novel. It’s much more exciting too. In every chapter something happened which made my heart beat in my throat. Whether it was Cole with a revelation (or one of his buddies) or whether something terrible happened which made me think everybody was dead. I just had to read on.

And then the ending. Gosh. It was so heart-wrenching, both in a sad and happy way. Because Jack was back, but the cost was great and it’s Cole’s fault. Brodi made me think things couldn’t get any worse and then suddenly everything turns out to be OK, but then BAM she throws up a huge bombshell of a plot twist on top (which went a little too quick for me – I had to read the pages twice). It was bizarre and yet fantastic to read. Well done. This book is many times better than the first one.

So all in all I think this book was really nice to read. I can’t wait for the third part. I’m really curious as to what Nikki, Jack and Cole are going to do to fix all of it, but I expect it will be magical!
