Review Drift – Becca FitzpatrickNadat dit boek me werd aangeraden en ik een paar meningen had gehoord, nam ik het besluit dit boek aan te schaffen. Ik was benieuwd naar het verhaal, mede doordat de lezers zo van mening verschillen en ik me afvroeg wat ik er zelf van zou vinden. Ik ben er met een neutrale blik ingestapt en ik moet eerlijk bekennen dat ik er toch prettig verrast door was.
Drift gaat over een zestienjarig meisje genaamd Nora Grey dat opeens een nieuwe klasgenoot krijgt genaamd Patch. Ze vindt hem eng en irritant, maar moet helaas een project met hem doen en zit daarom met hem opgescheept. Patch blijkt echter veel over Nora te weten, dingen die een buitenstaander nooit zou kunnen weten, wat raar is. Bovendien komt Nora hem overal tegen en gebeuren er mysterieuze dingen om haar heen. Ze weet dat Patch er iets mee te maken heeft, maar weet niet wat. Nora maakt spannende en griezelige dingen mee in het verhaal en weet ook niet of ze Patch wel kan vertrouwen.
Allereerst moet ik zeggen dat ik het boek een erg lelijke cover vond hebben in het Nederlands. Ik heb in mijn leven vrijwel nooit zo’n afschuwelijke cover gezien en het frappante eraan is ook dat Nederland het enige land is dat de cover van het oorspronkelijke boek niet heeft overgenomen. De Nederlandse cover is niet om aan te zien (zie plaatje hiernaast). Om die reden heb ik dus ook het boek in het Engels aangeschaft. Een mooie bijkomstigheid is dat ik daarmee ook gelijk mijn Engelse leesvaardigheid verbeter. Ik moet eerlijk zeggen dat ik er twijfelend mee begon, maar ik kon mezelf algauw helemaal verliezen in het boek.
Het boek begint al gelijk met de introductie van Patch en de frictie tussen hem en Nora. Vanaf het begin is het al duidelijk dat Patch wel heel erg geïnteresseerd is in Nora. De schrijfster heeft Patch consequent gehouden en dat valt te merken. Dit kan echter niet gezegd worden over Nora. Nora is in het begin namelijk afstandelijk tegen Patch, sterker nog, ze vindt hem verschrikkelijk. Ik snap dat dit een houding kan zijn, maar opeens, ergens halverwege het boek, verandert deze houding naar pure lust en verliefdheid. Dit is wel een heel plotselinge overgang en nergens kun je merken dat Nora ook maar enigszins geïnteresseerd in hem is, behalve na dat ene punt.
Daarnaast vind ik het jammer dat de schrijfster meerdere “slechteriken” in haar boek heeft gestopt. Het is net alsof ze extra invulling zocht en daarom maar een aantal “slechte” personen erin heeft gemieterd om het verhaal aan te dikken. Ik vind het afdoen aan het algehele verhaal, ze had beter één slechterik kunnen kiezen en het daarbij houden, voor één boek dan. Nora verdenkt namelijk ook iedereen in haar omgeving en dat komt nogal onrealistisch over. Een echt mens in deze wereld verdenkt namelijk niet elk persoon van moord of achtervolging, het lijkt een beetje paranoïde.
Wat wel een pluspunt was, is de zinderende beschrijvingen van de liefde tussen de twee hoofdpersonen. De vonken spatte letterlijk van de pagina’s af en het ging er af en toe heet aan toe. Wat dat betreft een zeer geslaagde romance beschrijving.
De actie is ook gedetailleerd en laat je echt op het puntje van je stoel zitten. Wanneer ik het boek per se moest wegleggen om iets anders te doen, bleef het maar in mijn hoofd rondspoken. Ik moest het gewoon lezen.
Becca Fitzpatrick neemt je echt mee in het verhaal en is er ook in geslaagd om je op een verkeerd pad te zetten m.b.t. de daders. Hoewel er wat schoonheidsfoutjes in zitten, vind ik dit boek toch een topper en ik ga zeker de volgende delen ook lezen!

Hush, Hush – Becca Fitzpatrick
This book
was recommended to me and after I had sifted through a few opinions online, I
took the decision to buy this book. I was curious to find out about the story,
knowing that other readers had such different opinions about it and I was
wondering what I myself would think about it. I started reading from a neutral
stance and after finishing it I have to say that I found it surprisingly good.
Hush, Hush is about a sixteen year old girl named Nora Grey who suddenly gets a new classmate called Patch. She thinks he’s irritating and scary, but unfortunately she has to do a biology project with him and is therefore stuck with him. Patch, however, seems to know a lot about Nora, things any outsider could not know, which is strange. And what’s even more strange is that Nora seems to run into Patch everywhere she goes. Mysterious stuff is suddenly happening all around her. She knows Patch is involved, but can’t figure out why. Nora experiences exciting and crazy things after she met Patch and doesn’t know if she can trust him.
First off,
I have to say I thought the Dutch cover of this book was appalling. In all my
life I have almost never seen such a horrendous cover and the weird thing about
it is that the Netherlands is the only country that changed the cover for this
book. It just looks ridiculous. So for that reason I bought the book in
English. A convenience is that I can improve my English reading skills with it.
Although I have to say I didn’t know if it was a good idea, eventually, when
reading, I realized it was much easier than I thought and soon I was drifting
away into Hush, Hush.
The book
almost immediately begins with an introduction to Patch and the friction
between Nora and him. From the beginning on it is clear that Patch is at the
least very interested in Nora. You can really notice that the writer made Patch
a consistent character. However, I can’t say the same about Nora. At the
beginning, Nora is very detached from Patch, she honestly hates him. This is
plausible, but then somewhere in the middle of the book she suddenly changes
her stance and is absolutely falling in love with him for no apparent reason
other than swooning. First she hates him and now she’s in love with him? This
change is too sudden and nowhere is it noticeable that Nora even so much as
likes him, let alone loves him. But suddenly, after one point in the story, she
just falls in love. Now that’s a bit too unbelievable.
I also find
it a pity that the writer had to invent a couple of bad guys just for the sake
of it. It’s like she was searching for extra filling and just made up some bad
guys just to thicken the story. I think it makes the book less than what it could
have been. The book would have been better with just one bad guy, atleast for
this first book in the series. It’s because Nora also suspects everyone in her vicinity
of having committed some awful or unspeakable crime and it really comes across
unnatural. A real human in the real world would not suspect everyone around him
of murder and it almost seems like Nora was made to look a bit paranoid.
What I do find nice about this book was the electrifying description of love between the two lead characters, because once it started, oh boy, it was good. The sparks literally flew off the pages and it got hot. Looked like a good romance, once it started and my eyes were locked on the pages looking for more.
The action
is also detailed and puts you on the edge of your seat. When I had to put the
book down to do something else, there wasn’t a moment when the book wasn’t on
my mind. I just had to read it.
Becca Fitzpatrick really takes you away in her story. She really made an effort to put you off the track. Even though it has some minor errors, I think this book is really good and I sure am going to read the sequels!
