Review Unearthly – Cynthia Hand

 
Dit boek heb ik gekocht naar aanleiding van de goede reviews op Goodreads. Het is alleen (nog) niet uit in Nederland, dus ik heb het in het Engels gelezen, waar ik overigens geen enkele problemen mee had. Ben het zo ondertussen wel gewend, na het lezen van de boeken van Becca Fitzpatrick. Unearthly mag ik zeker niet vergelijken met de Hush, Hush saga; Cynthia Hand kan echt goed schrijven. Dit boek was een echte verademing in de Young Adult literatuur.

Het boek gaat over een zestienjarig meisje genaamd Clara Gardner die een halve engel is. Ze heeft een soort “doel” in haar leven, als Engel. Ze krijgt visioenen van een jongen die ze moet redden, waardoor ze gaat verhuizen naar waar hij woont. Op school ontmoet ze hem, Christian, de jongen uit haar dromen (letterlijk). Maar het gaat niet helemaal zoals verwacht, want ze ontmoet ook Tucker, die ze leuk vindt, omdat hij “gewoon” is en niet uit een visioen komt. Ze gaat op een zoektocht naar wat juist is en wat niet, volgt haar visoenen en moet uiteindelijk keuzes maken die haar lot bepalen.

Als je het korte verhaaltje op de achterkant van het boek leest, denk je: “O, nee, niet weer een engelenverhaal”, maar je zult zeker verrast worden als je het verhaal gaat lezen. Het is namelijk totaal niet cliché geschreven en Cynthia heeft zeker een vernieuwende kijk op het hele engelen en demonen idee. Ik dacht eerst dat ik het totaal niet leuk zou vinden dat je al weet dat Clara een engel is, maar het valt reuze mee. Het verhaal begint pas op het moment dat ze haar eerste visioen krijgt en is nog steeds mysterieus en spannend, zelfs als je al vanaf het begin weet dat ze een engel is.

De schrijfster is ontzettend realistisch te werk gegaan in het beschrijven van de gevoelens en gedachten van de hoofdpersoon. Clara lijkt echt een goed idee te hebben van wat wel “normaal” is en wat niet. Ze kijkt ook naar de vreemde dingen die in haar leven gebeuren als “wat gebeurt hier nou weer allemaal?”. Ze is heel levensecht en nuchter beschreven, wat vrijwel onmogelijk lijkt als je over “ik ben een engel” schrijft, maar het is Cynthia toch gelukt. Ik vind het erg knap.

Het is echt een verademing dat de schrijfster er goed op heeft gelet dat relaties in een boek ook worden opgebouwd en niet spontaan ontstaan. De hoofdpersoon neemt echt de tijd om haar geliefde beter te leren kennen en wordt pas na een tijdje ook echt verliefd op hem. Je ziet de liefde tussen Clara en Tucker in het begin niet aankomen en ergens in het midden denk je “hij vindt haar leuk! Ik wist het wel!”. Ook de zwoele scènes tussen Clara en Tucker zijn om van te zwijmelen. Af en toe zat ik echt als een tienermeisje te grinniken van blijdschap.

De spanning weet ze hoog te houden, het hele boek lang. Cynthia heeft goed gebruik gemaakt van cliffhangers en plottwists. Als je begint met lezen denk je te weten hoe het afloopt, maar uiteindelijk wordt je toch verrast. Ze geeft de lezer genoeg informatie om te denken dat hij of zij weet waar het over gaat, maar toch weinig genoeg dat je geïnteresseerd blijft in de uitkomst. En dat is knap gedaan.

Dit is een fantastisch boek en mag naar mijn mening best wat meer in de belangstelling staan. Dit boek is het zeker waard (in plaats van Hush, Hush – ahem). Er mag zeker een Nederlandse versie worden uitgebracht (ik ben echt verbaasd dat die er nog niet is – uitgevers, wat doen jullie in vredesnaam? Dit is een goudmijn!), zodat ik het mijn vriendinnen kan aanprijzen en er mag op den duur van mij ook een film van worden gemaakt. Dit boek zit op het niveau van de Honger Spelen. Zo’n goed boek is dit! Het laat je echt smachtend achter. Je moet het echt lezen!

Review Unearthly – Cynthia Hand

My goodness, where do I begin? This book is a breath of fresh air in the Young Adult literature. I bought this book, because of good recommendations on Goodreads. It’s just not out in Dutch yet, so I read it in English, which is not a problem to me, since I’m used to it ever since I’ve been reading the books of Becca Fitzpatrick. Unearthly is certainly not to be compared to the Hush, Hush saga; Cynthia hand can actually write.

This book is about a sixteen year old girl named Clara Gardner who is half angel and half human. She has this kind of “purpose” in life, as an angel. She gets these visions of a boy who she has to save from a terrible forest fire, so she and her family move to where he lives. She meets him at school, Christian, the boy from her dreams (literally). But it’s not going Clara expected, because she also meets Tucker, the boy her non-angel side likes. She goes on a search for what’s right and what’s wrong, follows her visions and eventually has to decide which choice to make that will decide her fate.

If you read the short story on the back of the book, you think: “O no, not another angel story”, but you’ll be surprised when you start reading. That’s because this story is not written like a stereotypical angelstory. Cynthia has a refreshing look on the subject. At first I thought I wasn’t going to like it (because we already know Clara is an angel and I like finding out), but it’s really not that bad. The story only begins once she gets her vision and it only gets more exciting and mysterious after that, even if you already know she is an angel.

Cynthia wrote about the feelings and thoughts of the lead character in a realistic way. Clara really seems to have a good idea of what’s “normal” and what’s not. She looks at the weird things in her life as if saying “what the heck is going on here?”. She is lifelike and down to earth, which almost seems impossible considering this is a story about a girl who’s also an angel. Cynthia did an amazing job describing all that.

It’s a breath of fresh air that the writer really paid attention to the relationships she describes in the book. They are built up, not just spontaneously exist. The lead character takes the time to get to know her love interest before she actually falls in love with him. Which is not something I can say about “some other” book. – wink –

You can see the love between Clara and Tucker growing with your own eyes. It’s not obviously there at the beginning of the book, but somewhere in the middle you start to think “Oh, he likes her! I knew it!”. The hot scenes between Clara and Tucker are to die for. Sometimes I was giggling and maybe even squealing inside like some teenage girl.

The action is really good in this book and you never feel bored. Cynthia made good use of cliffhangers and plottwists. When you start reading you think you know how it ends, but eventually you are still surprised by the ending. She gives the reader just enough information to think that he or she knows what’s going to happen, but just too little to actually know it for sure. It keeps you wanting to read more, to know the truth. It’s just brilliantly done.

This is an amazing book and in my opinion should be more in the spotlight. This book is definitely worth it (unlike Hush, Hush – ahem). Certainly there should be a Dutch version (I’m surprised there isn’t any – guys, publishers, WTH are you doing up there? This is a goldmine!), so I can tell all my friends to start reading this. And I think there should even be a movie. This book is on the Hunger Games level. That’s how good it is. It leaves you craving for more. You have to read it!
