Review Inwijding - Veronica Roth

Inwijding is een boek dat zich afspeelt in de toekomst en is een dystopian Young-adult. Het gaat over een zestienjarig meisje genaamd Tris dat de belangrijkste keuze moet maken in haar leven, namelijk bij welke factie ze wil horen voor de rest van haar leven. De vijf facties staan elk voor een bepaalde waarde: onverschrokkenheid, zelfverloochening, oprechtheid, eruditie (intelligentie) en vriendschap. Tris ondergaat een ernstige ontgroening in haar gekozen factie en wordt verliefd op een jongen genaamd Four. Als er vreemde dingen gebeuren, gaat Tris op onderzoek uit en komt ze erachter dat er meer aan de hand is tussen de verschillende facties. Tris heeft zelf ook een geheim en komt erachter dat haar geheim levens zou kunnen redden, maar ook haar eigen dood zou kunnen betekenen.

Inwijding begon intrigerend. Het verhaalconcept is vernieuwend en interessant, waardoor ik dit boek gelijk wilde oppakken toen ik de eerste drie pagina’s had gelezen. Het boek ging al gelijk van start met de keuze die Tris moest maken tussen de verschillende facties. Het kwam dus lekker goed op gang, ik zat er gelijk midden in.

Het nadeel vond ik alleen dat de ontgroening erg lang duurde, namelijk het hele boek. Ik had eigenlijk verwacht dat het halverwege het boek wel zo’n beetje klaar zou zijn, maar dat bleek niet het geval. Soms liep de vertelsnelheid daardoor een beetje terug. Ook omdat je in elk hoofdstuk las over “weer een nieuwe ontgroeningsmethode”. Alsof we er al niet genoeg hebben gelezen. Het verhaal mocht van mij dan wel eens gaan beginnen.

Over verhaal gesproken. Waar het verhaal naartoe ging, werd ook pas duidelijk in de laatste honderd bladzijden. Dat vond ik erg jammer, omdat ik al die tijd heb zitten wachten en het kwam ook opeens uit de lucht vallen. Zo van “o, het gaat nu beginnen blijkbaar”.

Wat dan wel weer goed was, was de liefde die werd beschreven tussen Tris en Four. Ik kon al gelijk vanaf het begin af aan merken dat Tris een oogje op hem had. Eerst zag Four haar nog niet staan, maar ik merkte wel degelijk dat hij haar interessant begon te vinden na een tijdje. De beschrijvingen die Veronica Roth ook gebruikte voor de kusscènes en knuffelpartijen waren uitermate goed. Ik kreeg het er in ieder geval warm van!

De actie was in dit boek volop aanwezig. Sterker nog, ik kan me niet eens een hoofdstuk herinneren waarin niet een portie spanning zat. Dat komt denk ik toch vooral door de factie die Tris had gekozen, namelijk onverschrokkenheid. Het zou moeilijker zijn geweest spanning te creëren in de factie van de erudieten, of nog erger, de onbaatzuchtigen.

Ik vind wel dat de actie hier en daar nep overkwam. Vooral omdat er zoveel plotwendingen in het boek werden gegooid. Sommige personages konden opeens super goed vechten (denk Dragonball Z stijl), terwijl ze voorheen complete watjes waren of geen excellentie vertoonden. Ik vind het daarom soms een beetje ongeloofwaardig, maar ach, er viel overheen te kijken.

Dit is een geslaagd boek, vol emoties en actie. Ik vind het hier en daar wat gebrekkig, maar ik kan er wel mee leven. De verhaallijn en liefdesontwikkeling waren interessant genoeg om me aan het lezen te houden. Ik kan het zeker aanraden voor dystopian fans!

Review Divergent - Veronica Roth 

Divergent is a dystopian Young-Adult novel about the not so distant future of Chicago. It tells a story about a sixteen year old girl named Tris who has to make the most important decision of her life: what faction does she want to belong to for the rest of her life? She can choose between five factions which each stand for a different value: Candor (honest), Erudite (the intelligent), Amity (peaceful), Dauntless (brave/tough) and abnegation (selfless). Tris is brutally initiated into her chosen faction (Dauntless) and falls in love with a boy named Four. When strange things start to happen, Tris goes out investigating and soon finds out there is more going on between the factions than she thought. Tris herself is also harboring a secret; one that could save lives, but also mean her own death.

Divergent is an intriguing novel. The concept is innovative and interesting, which made me want to read the book after I had only just read the first three pages. It starts at the point where Tris has to make her choice between the different factions. So the book starts out well. I was right in the middle of it when I started reading.

The downside was that the initiation took such a long time, that it takes up almost three quarters of the book. I had actually expected the initiation part to be done somewhere halfway in the book, but that turned out not to be the case. Sometimes the speed in which the story was told was reduced, because in every chapter there’s another “initiation method” told. As if we hadn’t read enough about it. If it were my own writing, I’d have said the story should have begun already.

Talking about stories, wherever this one was heading only became clear in like the last hundred pages. It was a real shame, because all that time I had been waiting for it and then it just came out of nowhere. It was like “o, so now it apparently begins”.

However, I liked how the love was described between Tris and Four. From the beginning it is noticeable that Tris likes him. Four doesn’t even recognize her at first, but after a while I could really notice by the writing that he did start to find her interesting. The way Veronica Roth described the kissing, smooching and hugging was utterly good. It was very hot, and not just the weather!

There is nonstop action in this book. I can’t even remember a chapter that didn’t have any excitement in it. I think that is mostly due to the faction Tris choose though, which is Dauntless. It would’ve been harder for Miss Veronica to pull this off in let’s say the faction of the Erudites, or worse, abnegation.

Sometimes though, the action can get a little phony. Especially because there are so many plot twists in this book. Some characters are suddenly awesome fighters (think Dragonball Z style), while before they were a complete wuss. For that reason I think this book can sometimes get a bit unrealistic, but oh well, I think I can overlook some of it. It’s not that big of a deal.

This book is splendid; it’s full of action and emotions. There are some flaws here and there, but I can live with them. The storyline and love scenes are interesting enough to keep me reading. I can honestly say “go read it”, especially if you are a Dystopian fan!
