Review/Recensie Until I Die - Amy Plum

Until I die is het vervolg van Die for Me. Het verhaal gaat verder met Kate en Vincent die op zoek gaan naar een oplossing voor het feit dat Vincent zijn leven wil opofferen voor anderen. Vincent zal er alles aan doen om een normaal leven met Kate te kunnen leven, maar dat kan levens kosten. Nieuwe vijanden komen naar voren en algauw beseft Kate dat er misschien meer op het spel staat dan hun relatie.

Het boek zit wederom vol met poëtische beschrijvingen van de stad Parijs, evenals andere locaties verder naar het zuiden. Soms gaat Amy Plum weer te diep in op de uiterlijke schoonheden, in plaats van het verhaal voort te stuwen. Nog steeds erger ik me aan deze manier van schrijven, omdat ik graag wil weten hoe het verder gaat, niet hoe de omgeving eruit ziet. Dat laat ik liever over aan mijn fantasie, dus velen van die stukken heb ik maar gewoon overgeslagen.

Waar ik me ook aan stoorde was de vreemde communicatie en relaties in dit boek. Vincent heeft het constant over “mon ange” wat ik een vreemde benaming vind voor je meisje (het betekent mijn engel). Sorry hoor, maar in het echte leven heb ik nog nooit iemand zo zijn liefje horen noemen.
Uit het niets zijn een paar karakters ook opeens verliefd op elkaar. Mensen van wie ik dat totaal niet zag aankomen, ook niet in het vorige boek (ik wil niet teveel weggeven). Het is in ieder geval een beetje uit de lucht komen vallen.

In dit boek gaan we ook dieper in op een extra onderdeel van de Revenants, namelijk de Champion. De redder/verlosser van het kwaad (in korte zin). Vanaf het begin krijgen we al te horen dat het Vincent is, volgens de karakters, maar gelang het boek vordert, krijg ik wel degelijk in de gaten dat er iets niet helemaal haaks is. Eigenlijk weet ik aan het einde van het boek al de volledige waarheid, terwijl dat volgens mij niet de bedoeling was, aangezien het volgende boek (If I should die) daarover gaat. Jammer dat het Amy Plum er zoveel hints in heeft gegooid, dat het voor mij eigenlijk al vergald is. Het “geheim” is voor mij al geen geheim meer.

Amy Plum heeft het echter wel voor elkaar gekregen om me te laten focussen op bepaalde karakters en die te bestempelen als “bad-guy”, terwijl die het dan uiteindelijk helemaal niet blijkt te zijn. De echte slechterik blijft (bijna) tot het eind verborgen. Ik was dan ook wel verbaasd, toen ik erachter kwam.

Dit boek komt wat traag op gang. De helft van het boek vraag ik me af wanneer het verhaal nou eindelijk eens gaat beginnen. Ik kreeg niet het gevoel alsof er een duidelijke leidraad was. Daarentegen was het wel zo dat, toen het verhaal eenmaal duidelijk werd, het steeds sneller ging. Aan het einde zit er behoorlijk wat actie in en ja, meisjes vechten eindelijk ook eens mee (Yes!). Dus dat was heel spannend.

Overigens worden we achtergelaten op een heuse cliffhanger, jawel. En niet zo’n kleine ook. Kate is ten einde raad en dan krijgen we één minuscule hint voor onze voeten geworpen en de rest moeten we maar gissen, tot begin mei.

Al met al heb ik gemixte gevoelens over dit boek. Ik weet niet helemaal wat het is, maar er ontbrak een beetje oempf. Het was wel een mooi boek, maar hier en daar las het net zo lekker slappe thee smaakt. Gewoon net niet.

Review Until I Die - Amy Plum

Until I Die is the sequel to Die for Me. The story continues with Kate and Vincent who try to find a solution for Vincent, who fights the urge to sacrifice his life to save others. Vincent will do anything to be able to live a normal life with Kate, but it could cost lives. New enemies come forth and soon Kate realizes there might be more at stake than just her relationship with Vincent.

Again, just like its predecessor, this book is filled with poetic descriptions of Paris and other locations further south. Sometimes Amy Plum elaborates too much and describes so much random scenery that she forgets the entire story. I am still annoyed by this writing style, because it just doesn’t push the story further and keeps on hammering on the pretty little details I don’t want to know. I’ll leave those things to my imagination, so I more or less skipped those parts.

Another thing that annoyed me was the weird communication and type of relationships in this book. Vincent is constantly talking about “mon ange”, referring to his girlfriend (meaning my angel), which I find very awkward. I've never heard anyone calling their spouse that name.
Also, some characters just happen to have fallen in love with some other characters for no apparent reason. I could not see this coming at all. Those loves weren’t even remotely present in the previous book, yet they simply sprouted out of nowhere here. It’s kind of silly. But, I don’t want to spoil too much.

If I should Die adds an extra layer to the Revenants. The Champion is introduced and I already hear it’s Vincent, according to the other characters. However, as the book progresses I find out there’s something wrong with this. I already know the real truth by the end of the book, even though that was probably not something I was supposed to know, since that’s what the next book’s (If I should Die) going to be about. It’s a pity Amy Plum gave so many hints that she kind of spoiled it for me. The “secret” is no longer a secret to me.

Amy Plum did however manage to make me focus on a certain character, labeling him as the bad-guy, whilst finding out at the end that it’s totally not the case. The real bad-guy (almost) stays hidden until the end. I was a bit surprised, when I found out.

Until I Die reads very slow, in my opinion. During one half of the book I continuously asked myself when the story is finally going to start. I didn’t really get the feeling there was a clear motive/theme. It was all just a bit vague.
However, when the story actually did lift off, it seemed to go faster and faster. There’s so much action going on near the end and finally girls get to fight along (Yes! Girls kick-ass). So that was really exciting.

Apart from that, we’re also left with a huge cliffhanger. Kate is at her wits’ ends and then we get one small clue thrown in front of us. That’s it. We'll just have to guess the rest of it, until May, when the final installment comes out.

All in all I have some mixed feelings about this book. I’m not exactly sure what it is, but a bit of “oomph” was missing. It was a great book, but some bits read like badly steeped tea. Just yugh.
