Review Die for Me - Amy Plum

 

Die for Me is een Engelstalig boek geschreven door Amy Plum. Het boek is niet in het Nederlands verkrijgbaar en ik heb het dan ook in het Engels gelezen. Het boek gaat over een meisje genaamd Kate dat haar ouders verliest bij een auto-ongeluk. Ze laat haar oude leven in Amerika achter en verhuisd naar Parijs waar ze bij haar grootouders gaat wonen. Daar ontmoet ze Vincent; een mysterieuze jongen die haar bevroren hart laat smelten. Ze komt erachter dat hij een Revenant is – een ondode wiens enige doel is zichzelf opofferen om de levens van anderen te redden. Al snel zit ze midden in de oorlog tussen goede Revenants en slechte Revenants en weet ze dat als ze haar hart blijft volgen, ze misschien wel niet meer veilig zal zijn.

Ik vond het boek boeiend genoeg om het niet aan de kant te leggen. Ik wilde steeds meer weten van de wereld van de Revenants en wat er zou gebeuren tussen de twee rivaliserende groepen. Ook de manier waarop de liefde tussen Kate en Vincent opbloeit is interessant, al zitten er wel wat gebreken in. Amy Plum brengt op een uitstekende manier de romantiek in Parijs helemaal naar voren.

Helaas zijn er ook een paar negatieve puntjes te vertellen over het boek. Allereerst vind ik dat de detailbeschrijving van de omgevingen behoorlijk saai en oninteressant zijn. Ze gaat er zo diep op in dat ik geen ruimte meer krijg om zelf dingen te verzinnen en daardoor krijg ik de neiging om hele passages waar alleen beschrijvingen in staan gewoon over te slaan. Dat is zonde. Dit boek is echter een soort Art romance boek, waarin kunst vaak aanwezig is en uitgelegd wordt, dus ik begrijp wel waarom Amy Plum hiervoor gekozen heeft. Het is een apart genre wat ik normaal gezien ook niet zou lezen, hoewel het in dit boek niet enorm stoort.

Daarnaast is de liefde tussen Kate en Vincent ook zomaar uit het niets ontstaan. Eerst vond ze hem interessant en hij stalkte haar een beetje, maar nergens kwam naar voren dat ze elkaar ook echt leuk vonden. En waarom dan ook echt? Opeens zegt Vincent dat hij helemaal gek op haar is en verliefd is en dergelijke, maar waar komt dat door? Het komt gewoon uit de lucht vallen. Nergens staat waarom hij nou eigenlijk van haar houdt en het lijkt me nogal onrealistisch om zomaar verliefd op iemand te worden zonder reden. Dus hun liefde gaat van nul naar honderd in ongeveer twee stappen en daarom kon ik er ook niet echt in mee. Ik kon niet lekker meeleven of voelen, tenzij ik deed alsof ze al tijden bij elkaar waren. Wat dan weer wel heel goed geschreven is, is de lust die de twee voor elkaar voelen ergens in het midden en eind van het boek. Daar gaat mijn hart in ieder geval sneller van kloppen!

Romantiek ontbreekt in dit boek totaal niet. Mensen die van zoetsappige scènes houden zouden dit boek echt fantastisch vinden. Ik vind het niet erg, al is het soms wel héél erg cliché. Een man die je voor je verjaardag op een rondvaart neemt, een cadeautje aan je geeft én je de Eiffeltoren verlicht in de nacht laat zien is wel erg overdreven, maar ik weet zeker dat er mensen zijn die hier helemaal van gaan zwijmelen. Nou, het was dan ook wel een leuk idee van Amy Plum, al is het niet erg realistisch, het spreekt wel tot de verbeelding. Beter overspoelende liefde dan mishandelende vriendjes (kuch: referentie naar Crescendo).

Nog een puntje wat me opviel was dat de uitleg van de Revenants wel heel erg uitgekotst werd door de karakters in het boek. Ik had helaas al de korte samenvatting van het boek gelezen (dus dat het gaat over ondoden) en daarom wist ik al wat het ongeveer waren, maar alsnog wordt er helemaal uitgebreid beschreven wat ze zijn. Dat gedeelte vond ik overbodig, dan hadden ze het beter niet in de samenvatting kunnen zetten, want het is een essentieel deel van het plot en het wordt notabene ook al uitgelegd in het boek. Het enige wat dan wel weer leuk was, was dat er verder in werd gegaan op hoe de Revenants werken en waar het door komt.

Er zat op het einde leuke actie in en het was dan ook een onverwacht einde. Ik moet wel zeggen dat het enigszins leek op Becca Fitzpatrick’s Hush, Hush, maar dat geeft niet. Dit boek was veel consistenter en boeiender dan Hush, Hush en dat maakt het allemaal weer goed. Ik heb genoten tijdens het lezen en ik ga dan ook het vervolg hierop lezen.

Review Die for Me - Amy Plum

Die for Me is not translated into Dutch and thus I have not been able to read it in Dutch, but as you all know that’s not at all a problem for me. The book is about a girl named Kate who loses her parents in a car accident. She then abandons her life in America and goes to live with her grandparents in Paris. There she meets Vincent; a mysterious boy who melts her frozen heart. She finds out he is a Revenant – an undead whose sole purpose is to sacrifice himself to save the lives of others. Soon Kate is in the midst of a war between good and bad Revenants and she knows that if she keeps following her heart, she might never be safe again.

I liked this book enough to not put it aside. I wanted to know more about the world of the Revenants and what would happen between the two rivaling groups of Revenants. It kept me reading. The way Kate’s and Vincent’s love blooms is interesting, though there are some flaws. Amy Plum is excellent at catching the romance that Paris offers and bringing it to life in a book.

Unfortunately there are also some negative points to this book. I think the details are often overdone, especially the ones of the scenery and surroundings. She’s going so far into describing the details that I as a reader don’t get any space to fantasize my own surroundings that fit with the story and I think this is of great importance when reading a book. When I read those overly detailed passages, I just skip over them sometimes, even though I hate doing it. They are just so boring. This book is somewhat of an Artsy Romance novel, in which art is a fundamental part of the book. It’s some sort of genre which I normally would not read. However, I am not that bothered by it.

Another point is that the love between Kate and Vincent instantly rises out of nowhere. First she finds him interesting and he’s stalking her (yeah, I know right), but nowhere does it really say they actually liked each other. They didn’t even have a conversation first. But somehow they just love each other. Why? Suddenly Vincent says he loves her and that he’s crazy about her, but where is it coming from? It just magically appeared. Nowhere does it say why he actually loves her and it seems rather unrealistic to me to just fall in love with someone for no apparent reason other than them being there and pretty. There love goes from zero to hundred in maybe two talks so I just couldn’t feel it happening. I couldn’t enjoy it, savor it, like I did with Unearthly. However, the lust they have for each other, somewhere half and near the end of the book, was written really well I must say. My heart was thumping when reading it!

Romance is never lacking in this book. People who like sappy love stories should definitely read this book, they would find it amazing. I don’t mind to read it, but sometimes it becomes quite cliché. When a man takes you on a boat for your birthday AND buys you a present AND shows you the Eiffel tower alight in midnight I find it very overdone. But I’m sure there are people who swoon over this stuff. Well, Amy did have a nice idea, even though it wasn’t realistic, it does speak to the imagination. It’s better to drown in love than to have mistreating boyfriends (Cough: Reference to Crescendo).

Another thing I noticed was that the explanation of the Revenants was really word diarrhea coming from all the characters in the book. Unfortunately I had already read a short summary of the book (which basically said they were undead and had to sacrifice themselves) so I already knew a large part of the idea before I even got to the part where they started explaining what Revenants are. So why was it in the summary at all? It was quite stupid, because it basically made it unnecessary to even read those passages AND the entire beginning of the story (when Kate doesn’t know what Vincent is) the reader is like “Duh! He is a Revenant!”. It’s a shame really. The only thing that was nice about that scene (where they blurt out everything that has to do with Revenants), was that Amy explained how the Revenants work and why it all happens the way it does. She made a nice background story.

At the end of the book there was a bit of nice action and also an unexpected ending. I have to say though, it looked a lot like Becca Fitzpatrick’s Hush, Hush, but that’s OK. This book was way more consistent and interesting than Hush, Hush, so that makes it all OK. I enjoyed reading this piece of writing and I certainly will be reading the next two novels in the trilogy.

Kort verhaal - Eendagsvlieg [NL]

Als eendagsvlieg heb ik toch wel veel taken. Ik moet alles binnen één dag doen. Wakker worden, eten opsporen, bedje zoeken, een vrouwtje vinden, kinderen maken en een keertje doodgaan. Het is ook allemaal zoveel in zo'n korte tijd. Als die meppende reuzen eens zouden weten wat ik allemaal moest doen, zouden ze wél medelijden met me hebben. Maar ach, onze soort is helaas niet zo geliefd.
Vanochtend hebben ze mijn buurvrouw van kant gemaakt. Ik zag haar aan het plafond hangen, aan zo'n sticker die zo lekker ruikt. Ja, ik was zelf ternauwernood ontsnapt, nadat ze me had gewaarschuwd met haar klapperende vleugels. Ik mocht niet naar haar toe komen; het was een val. Nou, ik ben die gevaartes helemaal zat. Moordenaars zijn het. Walgelijke wezens die overal bende maken en hun schaamte op ons afreageren. Wij zitten hun rommel op te eten en ze hameren gewoon op ons in. We doen hen een dienst! Ondankbare smeerlappen. Ik ben er klaar mee. Ze kunnen de pot op. Morgen word ik één dag olifant en trap ik over ze heen.

Review: Hallowed - Cynthia Hand [NL&ENG]

Review Hallowed – Cynthia Hand

 

Gelijk nadat ik het vorige boek van Cynthia Hand uit had (namelijk Unearthly), ben ik begonnen aan Hallowed. Ik kon het gewoonweg niet laten liggen, omdat het verhaal me beet heeft gepakt en niet meer loslaat.

Hallowed gaat verder waar Unearthly is gestopt. Clara heeft een leuke tijd met Tucker, maar krijgt ondertussen weer een visioen van haar volgende taak. Iemand die ze liefheeft gaat binnenkort dood. Clara probeert er in het boek achter te komen wie dat is en wordt daardoor vervreemd van Tucker. Naarmate de tijd vordert worden Clara en Christian ook steeds betere vrienden en wordt het moeilijk voor Clara om te kiezen tussen haar grote liefde en haar lot. Pas vanaf het moment dat ze weet wie er gaat sterven, kan Clara een beslissing nemen.

Dit boek is echt fantastisch geschreven. Waarom? Omdat je bij elk hoofdstuk wordt geconfronteerd met iets nieuws en Cynthia heeft briljante cliffhangers in de hoofdstukken verwerkt. Ook weet ze de spannende en rustige momenten in het boek te balanceren, zodat je hersenen niet overwerkt raken. Ze geeft de lezer echt goed de tijd om alles in zich op te nemen en dat is fijn.

De relatie tussen Tucker en Clara wordt steeds ingewikkelder. Je merkt echt door subtiele hints en gesprekken dat het niet de goede kant op gaat. En dan hebben we ook nog Christian die steeds interessanter wordt en wiens personage eindelijk wat meer diepgang en geschiedenis krijgt. Natuurlijk gaat Clara weer twijfelen over bij wie ze nou wil zijn, want de twee jongens gaan om haar vechten. Maar in dit boek wordt het echt heel goed aangepakt. Cynthia smijt niet met ruzies of onnozele gedachtegangen, maar echte logische oorzaken en gevolgen waardoor de lezer ook echt meevoelt en denkt dat Clara geen andere keuze heeft. Ik vind dat dit boek de eerste is die erin slaagt om de liefdesdriehoek geslaagd neer te zetten. En in deze tijd waarin tienerboeken volgepropt worden met vreemde verhoudingen, steekt Hallowed er met kop en schouders bovenuit.

Ik leef echt mee met Clara. Vanaf het moment dat ik weet dat iemand in haar omgeving doodgaat, begin ik gelijk conclusies te trekken. Telkens als ze weer een nieuwe hint geeft, verander ik van slachtoffer en uiteindelijk kom ik weer terug bij wat ik eerst al dacht. De lezer krijgt echt een gevoel van: “ja! Ik wist dat het die persoon zou zijn!”. Pas vanaf dat moment komen de echte gevoelige scènes pas. Clara gaat door een emotionele periode en dat wordt zo beschreven dat ik er zelf bijna van moet huilen. En dan de begrafenis, dat is echt ijzingwekkend. Maar ik mag niet te veel vertellen, want dan verklap ik het boek!

Dit boek is echt om van te smullen. Het kan je tranen met tuiten bezorgen, maar het is zeker de moeite waard. Je krijgt namelijk echt het gevoel alsof je zelf letterlijk in het verhaal zit. Ik heb eerlijk gezegd nooit eerder zoveel gevoeld voor een boek. Dus dat alleen al maakt dit boek ook weer een topper! Cynthia Hand, kom maar op met het derde boek! Ik kan niet wachten.

Review Hallowed – Cynthia Hand

Right after I finished the previous Cynthia Hand book (Unearthly) I started reading Hallowed. I just couldn’t stop myself from picking up the book, because the story caught me and didn’t let me go. I just had to plunge myself back into this mystical World Cynthia Hand has created.

Hallowed continues where Unearthly left off. Clara has a good time with Tucker, smooching and all, but in the mean time she is also getting visions of her new next task. Her angel destiny. Someone she loves is going to die. Clara tries to find out who it is and by doing so becomes more and more estranged from Tucker. As time goes on Clara and Christian connect more and more and this makes it hard for Clara to choose between her love Tucker and her destiny Christian. Only when she knows who’s going to die, is Clara able to make a decision.

This book is awesome. Just awesome. I have no other word for it. Why? Because with every chapter you’re confronted with something new and interesting. Cynthia Hand put jaw dropping cliffhangers in the chapters which makes you flip pages like a crazy person. And she even knows how to balance the exciting action stuff with calm soothing moments, so you don’t get a heart attack from all the mind blowing. She really gives the reader enough time to take everything in and that’s nice.

The relationship between Tucker and Clara keeps getting more complicated. You really notice that, because of the subtle hints and conversations, it’s not going in the right direction. And then we have Christian who keeps getting more interesting and whose character finally gets some depth and history. Of course Clara starts to doubt who she really wants to be with, because the two boys will fight over her. But in this book it’s handled really well. Cynthia doesn’t throw around arguments or petty thoughts, but logical cause and effect, which makes the reader feel for and think like Clara, who has no other choice but to choose. And in this time, where teen books are filled to the brim with nonsensical relationships, Hallowed makes an effort to be outstanding. It works like a charm.

I really felt for Clara when I read this book. From the moment I knew that someone in her surrounding was going to die, I immediately started drawing my own conclusions. Every time she gave a new hint, I changed the victim and of course eventually ended up with the person I had initially thought would die. It just makes me think: “See! I knew it all along!”. After that the emotional scenes start. Clara goes through an emotional time, knowing who is going to die and it’s described so well that it makes me want to cry (not that I did, but I did feel sorry). En then that funeral, it was chilling. But I can’t tell you too much, because then I’ll spoil it all!

This book is addictive. It can make you cry like nothing else can, but it sure is worth it. You really get the feeling you’re in the story yourself and not a whole lot of writers can do that. I honestly never felt as much for a book as I did with Hallowed. That alone makes this book a must-read. Cynthia hand, I’m ready for your third book! Bring it on! I can’t wait.
