Review Opstand - Veronica Roth

Opstand is het vervolg op Inwijding en gaat gelijk verder waar Inwijding was gebleven. En dan bedoel ik ook echt letterlijk gelijk verder. Tussen de facties waar Tris leeft, heerst oorlog en ze zal een kant moeten kiezen. Met haar afwijking zal ze verder moeten leven, ook al weet ze nog niet wat dat betekent voor haar toekomst.

Het eerste wat opvalt aan die boek, is dat de schrijfster ervoor heeft gekozen om direct verder te gaan waar het verhaal in het vorige boek stopte. Er zit niet eens een minuut tussen. Daardoor moet je als lezer wel heel goed weten waar het vorige boek over ging, wil je weten wat er gaande is. Ook besteed Veronica geen enkele seconde aan het introduceren van de personages. Nee, ze verwacht dat we die allemaal nog wel kennen uit Inwijding. Ik heb dat boek een half jaar voor Opstand al uitgelezen. Hoe kan ik dan alle namen nog hebben onthouden? Hoe weet ik wie wat heeft gedaan? Niet dus. Ik wordt geforceerd om Inwijding er nog eens bij te pakken en te zeggen: “O, ja, daar ging het ook al weer over en die persoon deed dat en dat mens was diens vader, et cetera.” Het is gewoon jammer dat Veronica niet de moeite heeft genomen om even te beschrijven wat er ook al weer gaande was. Zoiets verwacht ik ook, want je komt het in bijna alle boeken tegen. Hier dus niet.

Juist omdat de schrijfster er niet aan heeft gedacht dat ik wellicht sommige karakters ben vergeten, wordt het me extra moeilijk gemaakt me in te leven in de personages. Elk hoofdstuk komen er weer nieuwe bij en dan moet ik de oudere, uit de vorige boeken, ook nog allemaal kennen. Het is gewoon een beetje teveel van het goede. Naar mijn idee zijn er veel te veel karakters gebruikt.

Wat ik dan wel weer subliem gedaan vind in dit boek, is dat de snelheid waarmee het verhaal vordert goed is. Elk hoofdstuk brengt iets nieuws en interessants waardoor ik aan het einde van het hoofdstuk telkens het idee krijg: “OMG, MOET DOORLEZEN!” Dit gaat zo’n beetje het hele boek door. Ik vind het heel moeilijk om het aan de kant te leggen. Ik wil maar door blijven lezen. Dus wat dat betreft is Veronica er qua spanning goed in geslaagd me op het puntje van mijn stoel te houden. Of in dit geval bed, want daar lees ik mijn boeken vaak.

Ook in dit boek is de actie om te snijden. Het is in Opstand veel beter beschreven dan in Inwijding, omdat het minder kinderachtig wordt beschreven en ook wat minder uit de lucht komt vallen. Ik voel de angst van Tris ook echt. De beschrijvingen van de emoties zijn zo goed dat ik echt denk: “Komt het nog wel goed? Hoe gaat ze dit ooit goed maken?” Uiteindelijk komt het wel weer goed, daar niet van, maar als ik me als lezer afvraag hoe dit in hemelsnaam ooit weer in orde komt, dan heb je het als schrijfster goed gedaan.

Het laatste dat ik nog wil zeggen, is dat Veronica in dit boek eindelijk ook dieper ingaat op de verschillende facties, hun achtergronden en hun manier van leven. Daardoor krijg ik als lezer een veel beter beeld van de wereld die zij heeft geschapen. Ik vind dat ze hier goed in geslaagd is, hoewel ik denk dat er nog het één en ander niet verteld werd omwille van het derde boek. Dat geeft ook niet, want ik wil ook niet alles gelijk weten. Natuurlijk moet er wat over blijven voor boek drie.

Al met al vond ik het een erg geslaagd boek. Het zit vol spanning en houdt me echt vast. Ik wil niet stoppen met lezen en dat is een goed teken. Er zitten wel wat minpuntjes aan, maar die kunnen over het hoofd gezien worden (mits je Inwijding in je boekenkast hebt, anders wordt het lastig). Het is in ieder geval duidelijk te zien dat Veronica heeft bijgeleerd en dat is altijd mooi om te zien bij auteurs. Ik kan eerlijk zeggen dat iedereen dit boek moet lezen, je zult er geen spijt van krijgen!

Review Insurgent - Veronica Roth 

Insurgent is the sequal to Divergent and continues where the latter left off. And with that I literally mean continues on. The factions that exist in Tris’ world are at war with each other and she’ll have to pick a side. Her condition makes her be at risk, but she has to continue living, even though she doesn’t know what it’ll mean for her future.

The first thing that’s really noticeable when reading this book, is that the writer chose to write on continuously. This means not a moment in between her first book and the second book has passed. This forces the reader to be knowledgeable about the situation and to keep the previous book in mind. Veronica does not waste a single second on introducing all the characters. No, she expects us to remember all of them from Divergent. I read that book about half a year ago. How could I possibly have remembered all their names? How would I know who’s done what? I don’t. I’m forced to take Divergent off the shelves and take another look at it only to go like: “Hmm, yeah, I remember, that’s what this person did and this person is that persons father, etcetera.” It’s just a shame Veronica didn’t make an effort to help us remember what was going on by writing a small piece about it. I would expect as much at least, because you’d find it in almost any book. Not in this one, though.

So because the writer didn’t think about the fact that a reader might have forgotten about her characters, she makes it extra hard for me to sympathize with them. Each chapter more and more brand new characters are introduced and then I also have to remember all the characters from the previous book. It’s just too much. In my opinion, she definitely created too many characters.

However, what I do find brilliantly done is the speed in which the story is told. Each chapter brings something new and exciting which, at the end of a chapter, makes me go something like this: “OMG, I HAVE TO CONTINUE READING!” This pretty much goes on the entire book. I found it very hard to put it aside and go to sleep. I just had to keep reading. So in that department, Veronica successfully put me on the edge of my seat with all the tension going on in Insurgent. Or rather, bed, because that’s where I read my books most of the time.

The action in this book is mind-blowing good. It’s written much better in Insurgent than it was in Divergent, because it’s less childish and also less out-of-nowhere-like. I can really feel Tris’ anxieties and fears. The emotions are so well written that I keep thinking: “Is it going to be OK? How is she ever going to make this alright?” Eventually it does work out fine, but if I, as a reader, wonder whether things will be alright again, you did an amazing job as a writer.

The last thing I want to say, is that Veronica finally lets us readers dig deeper into the world of the factions and lets us explore all their backgrounds and cultures. Doing so gives me a better overview of the world she created. I think she succeeded well in this, even though some things are left unsaid, but I guess that’s for the third book. It’s OK, I don’t need to know everything just yet. There’s got to be something left for Veronica to write in book three.

All in all I think this was a wonderfully written book. It’s full of excitement and really grabs my attention. I couldn’t stop reading and that’s a good sign. There’s some hiccups in the story here and there, but we can look through that (if you have Divergent in your bookcase, because else it’s going to be tough). It’s clear Veronica learned from her experience with Divergent and put it to good use in Insurgent, which is always a welcome thing with authors. I can honestly say, go read this book, you won’t regret it!
