Review/Recensie Everneath -Brodi Ashton

Everneath gaat over een meisje genaamd Nikki dat is meegenomen naar de onderwereld waar ze meer dan honderd jaar werd leeggezogen van al haar emoties door Cole; een Everliving. Nikki is weer terug in het land van de levenden en heeft maar zes maanden om iedereen van wie ze hield gedag te zeggen, voor ze weer naar de onderwereld wordt meegesleurd en haar leven dan voorgoed zal eindigen. Maar er is een probleem; Cole is haar gevolgd en wil haar tot zijn koningin maken, omdat zij de sleutel is tot de troon van de onderwereld.

Het begin van dit boek was echt sterk. Vooral het proloog trok me echt naar binnen, omdat het gelijk startte bij de Underworld en dat het leegzuigproces (iew) klaar was. De rijke fantasie sleurde me echt mee. Demonen die als zwarte lakens zich om Nikki en Cole hulden, het las allemaal fantastisch en lekker door.

De rest van de hoofdstukken begonnen steeds meer tegen te vallen. In het begin begreep ik nog wel waarom Nikki zo stoïcijns leek. Ze wilde niets, durfde niets (begrijpelijk, als je honderd jaar bent leeggezogen van al je emoties), maar na een tijdje werd het toch wel irritant. Vooral toen ze maar niets bleef doen, ondanks dat het boek je constant vertelde dat Nikki toch echt afscheid wilde nemen. Ze deed het alleen niet.

De pluskant vond ik vooral het idee dat ik niet wist of ze nou echt dood zou gaan of niet. Elke keer als ik weer dacht dat het beter ging, kwam er weer een negatief punt naar voren waardoor het wel fout moest gaan. Het was nog tot op het laatste moment niet duidelijk wat er met Nikki zou gebeuren en dat vind ik echt een topper van deze schrijfster.

Aan de andere kant was de liefde echt ongeloofwaardig. Nikki bleef zogenaamd alleen maar in leven die honderd jaar, omdat ze aan Jack dacht, haar vorige liefde. Maar ik vond Jack niet echt spannend, toen ze weer gewoon op aarde was. Hij was een algemene sporter, een algemeen persoon, een algemene scholier, een algemene…alles. Zo normaal. Dat is gewoon saai. Cole, de zogenaamde slechterik (hoewel ik hier ook aan twijfel – lees het boek maar), vond ik veel interessanter. Soms dacht ik “waarom gaat ze niet gewoon met Cole mee? Lijkt me leuker”, maar dat was natuurlijk niet het doel van de schrijfster. Maar het feit alleen al dat ik daaraan denk en het dus niet eens ben met de beslissingen van de hoofdpersoon van het boek, maakt dus eigenlijk dat het niet helemaal soepel loopt.

Het laatste puntje wat me een beetje tegenzat, was het feit dat dit boek een soort nieuwere versie van het verhaal van Persephone was (Griekse godin). Ik weet niet waarom, maar ik houd er gewoon niet zo van als mensen heel duidelijk aangeven dat hun boek “idee” ergens vandaan komt. Dan blijf ik dat maar in mijn hoofd houden en kan ik dus niet meer met een frisse blik naar het boek kijken.

Daarentegen vond ik de moeilijke, emotionele tijden die Nikki en haar vriendin doorgingen erg mooi beschreven. Het is duidelijk dat deze schrijfster wel weet hoe echte tieners denken (ja, dit is weer een referentie ;) – haha) en ze maakt er een geloofwaardig verhaal van. Dus hiervoor krijgt ze van mij een pluim!

Ik heb dus gemixte gevoelens bij dit boek, maar nu ik eenmaal begonnen ben (ja, jullie kennen me ondertussen wel) moet ik het volgende boek ook weer gaan lezen. Dus op naar de volgende!

Review Everneath - Brodi Ashton

Everneath is about a girl named Nikki who’s been taken to the underworld, where she’s been sucked dry of all her emotions by Cole; an Everliving. Nikki is back in the land of the living, but she only has three months left to live. Then she’ll be taken back to the underworld and her life will be over. But there’s one problem; Cole followed her back up and wants to make her his Queen, because she is the key to the throne of the underworld.

This book’s beginning was strong. Especially the prologue really sucked me in, because it immediately started at the Underworld and ending of the sucking-process (eew). Brodi Ashton’s rich fantasy yanked me into this book. Demons that covered Nikki and Cole like black blankets; it just read like butter spreads on your sandwich.

The rest of the chapters however kept getting worse by the page. In the beginning I understood why Nikki seemed so impassive. She didn’t want to do anything, she was afraid of everything (it’s quite understandable, after having all your emotions sucked out of you, who wouldn’t feel that way), but after a while it mostly became annoying. Especially when she kept on doing nothing, even though (according to the book) she was supposed to say goodbye to all her loved ones. She just didn’t.

On the plus side; this book really kept me guessing on whether she would die or not. Each time I thought she was going to live, something came up again and made me think nothing could fix it after all. Even until the final moments it still wasn’t clear what would happen to Nikki. I think the writer did a great job with this.

There are however some points that were just…meh. Like the love, for example. Apparently Nikki only managed to stay alive for a hundred years, because she kept Jack’s face (her ex) in her mind. But when she came back to the surface, I didn’t find Jack all that exciting. He was just your average jock, an average student, an average person, an average… just everything. He was so normal. That’s just plain boring. Cole, on the other hand, who was supposed to be the “evil guy” (I still doubt this however – just read the book), was much more exciting to read about. Sometimes I thought “why doesn’t Nikki just go with him? Seems more fun to me”, but that obviously wasn’t what the writer intended. The fact alone that I think that and that I don’t agree with the decisions of the lead character, suggests that this book didn’t read as smoothly as I had hoped.

The last bit that I didn’t find very interesting was the fact that this book was supposed to be some kind of newer version to the old story of Persephone (Greek goddess). I don’t know why, but I just don’t like it when people clearly state their “idea” is plainly copied and molded into a new version. I just can’t get it out of my head when I read and it prevents me from looking at the work with a fresh and open mind.

However, I did find the tough, emotional times Nikki and her best friend went through were beautifully written. It was quite clear this writer actually does know how real teens think (yes, this is another reference ;) – haha) en she created a believable story. So for this she gets a thumbs up from me!

So, all in all, I have mixed feelings about this book, but now that I’ve started reading this series (as you all know about me), I just have to read the next book as well. So, on to the sequel!
